An average yield of 6.3 tons/ha. of certified palay seed was obtained by Paisal Bukol, a seed grower, from his ten-hectare seed production model farm planted to NSIC Rc 216 registered seed in November, 2020. To showcase the result of the said farm located at Barangay Bunawan, Datu Paglas, Maguindanao, more than a hundred officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform, local government unit of Datu Paglas and farmer-leaders were in attendance during the harvest festival held on Thursday, February 18, 2021.

Highlighting the festival was crop cutting led by Engr. Ismail Guiamel, director for Agricuture Services of MAFAR representing Dr.Mohammad Yacob, Minister of MAFAR. Together with the director were Mayor Abubakar Paglas; Hadji Abas Bukol,109 Base Commander; Dr. Ronjamin Maulana, Director of MAFAR Maguindanao Provincial Office; Omara Kempa, Chief of the Bureau of Plant Industry- National Seed Quality Control Services; Alex Pompong, Chairman of the Mun. Agriculture & Fishery Council; Joffel Pompong, MAFAR Mun. Officer; Mando Tocao, Mun. Kagawad and Jay Tocao, Barangay Chairman, farmers and visitors followed.

Director Guiamel urged the seed growers to strengthen their group and to produce high quality of certified palay seeds and be able to meet the production demand of the farming communities in the BARMM. This will somehow ensure an increase in farmers ‘ yield and income, he noted.

Meanwhile, Mayor Paglas expressed his gratitude to Minister Yacob for the interventions provided by MAFAR to the local government of Datu Paglas and to its farmers. “Tanging ang MAFAR lamang ang tanggapan sa BARMM na may pinakamaraming nadalang tulong dito sa aming bayan”, the Local Chief Executive said. The MAFAR’s intervention extended to the LGU of Datu Paglas are the distribution of farm inputs, on-going construction of concrete dryer in the amount of P480,000 and the approved establishment of rice processing center which consisted of warehouse, drying and milling facilities amounting to P8.0 M. Bukol’s gross income from his average yield of 6.3 ton/ha is computed to be at least P200, 000 assuming the prevailing price of certified palay seed is P38.00/kg at 14% MC , says Tong Abas, MAFAR Chief Agriculturist. He further compared that a seed grower’s gross income is actually more than twice the gross income of a usual rice farmer. Assuming the same values of average yield/ha and MC, the gross income of a rice farmer would be P97,500/ha at P18.00/kg. Most of the issues and concerns on seed production presented during the open forum is believed to be minimized and resolved thru MAFAR ‘s provision of designated regional and provincial seed inspector.
