The MAFAR, through Minister Dr Mohammad S. Yacob, has been designated as chair of the Bangsamoro Food Sufficiency Task Force (BFSTF) and participated in first ever meeting of the task force on August 19, 2020 held at the BPDA Conference Hall, Bangsamoro Government Center, Cotabato City.
As per Executive Order (EO) No. 005 Series of 2020 from the Office of the Chief Minister Ahod B. Ebrahim, the BFSTS was created as the effect of the presentation and approval of the milestones of food sufficiency program towards sustainable food system by BPDA Director General Mohajirin T. Ali during the 38th Cabinet Meeting on June 30, 2020.
In his opening statement, Minister Yacob emphasized the need for convergence and synergy of efforts and varied assistance from the different ministries and agencies of the BARMM in attaining food self-sufficiency that according to him, shall happen when the region is able to provide the food needs of its people from its local or domestic production.
The activity was highlighted by the presentation of the details of the approved EO No. 005 and the Implementation, Rules, and Mechanisms (IRM) of the FSTF towards sustainable food system in the BARMM by Director General Ali who serves as the vice-chair of the task force.
Based on the presentation, results of the 2015 Survey of Food Insecurity in Mindanao showed that 43.1% of the population is severely food insecure and 37.8% is moderately food insecure. With this, the need is high to carefully coordinate, rationalize, monitor, and assess the interventions of the concerned ministries to ensure a holistic approach to achieve regional food security.
Aside from World food Programme Cotabato Sub Office Head Dr Mishael Q. Argonza, heads and designated representatives from the other ministries of the BARMM like MENRE, MSSD, MILG, MTIT, MBHTE, MOH, MOST, MOLE, and MFBM were also present during the meeting.
