COTABATO CITY – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform conducted 1st BARMM send-off ceremony of the Fishery Law Enforcement Operations for the Sardines close fishing season on November 18 at MAFAR Covered court, BGC.
The activity is a collaborative effort together with MAFAR, Coast Guard, PNP Maritime, and other constituents to protect the Bangsamoro water’s natural resources during the close season.
Director General for Fisheries Services, Pendatun S. Patarasa, MPA said the event marked the first-ever sending-off ceremony of sardine closed season in Basilan Strait, Sulu Sea, and Sibugay Bay. It is a significant milestone in their collective effort to preserve and protect the fisheries resources that the Bangsamoro people are relying on for their livelihood.
He said our shared commitment to sustainable fisheries practices is a testament to ensuring that future generations can continue to benefit from the bountiful waters of BARMM. This is possible because our people have worked to sustain these resources, promoting resilience and growth in our community.
“We stand our heartfelt gratitude to our law enforcement agency who have come together to support this initiative. Your cooperation and dedication are vital to the success of this activity,” DG Patarasa added.
The closing season will run from November 15, 2024, to February 15, 2025. During this period, cultivation measures will be implemented to protect sardine spawning and allow juveniles to mature. After the season, the specified waters will reopen, allowing fisherfolk to resume their livelihood activities.
