BASILAN – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR) hosted a forum on fishpond development, bringing together fishpond operators, government officials, and industry experts to discuss strategies for enhancing productivity and sustainability on November 11-14 2024 at Isabela City.
The event began with opening remarks from PD Hanie Muadz Junuban, MPA, JD., who assured participants that MAFAR is committed to supporting their needs and requests. “We are here to help you uplift your livelihood and develop your fishponds to ensure continued success and increased production,” he stated.
Director II of the FRRS, Mohammadtaha Pendaliday, Ph.D., echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and understanding between the government and fishpond operators (FLAs). “Our goal is to work together for the betterment of the FLAs,” he said. “We want to hear your requests and concerns, and we believe that by adhering to moral governance and Allah SWT’s will and laws, we can achieve greater efficiency and a more sustainable future.”
Mr. Christopher Baculi, MPA, Fisheries Regulation Officer II, presented the Fisheries Administrative Order No. 197-2, Series of 2024, which outlines the amended rules and regulations governing the lease of public lands for fishponds and mangrove-friendly aquaculture.
Chief Aquaculturist Abdurasul S. Sarail addressed participants’ queries, emphasizing the importance of balancing the justification for proposals and requests with the target development of fishpond areas. He stressed that sustainable practices are crucial for the long-term health of fishponds and the surrounding environment.
The forum concluded with a lively Q&A session, providing a platform for participants. This interactive exchange fostered a sense of collaboration and shared responsibility for the future of fishpond development in the Province of Basilan.
