PUERTO PRINCESA, PALAWAN – The National Seaweed Congress 2024, held on November 7-8, brought together key stakeholders in the Philippine seaweed industry to discuss the latest developments, trends, and innovations.
Director General for Fisheries Mr. Pendatun S. Patarasa, MPA; Director II of Fisheries Operations Services Dr. Macmod D. Mamalangkap; and OIC of the Fisheries Production Division, Ms. Baby K. Dindo attended the said event.
The highlight of the congress was the Seaweed Food Products Exhibit, where attendees explored a variety of seaweed-based products, highlighting their versatility and nutritional benefits. Industry experts presented updates on the Market Trends and Status of the Seaweed Industry, addressing challenges and growth opportunities both domestically and internationally.
Also, Innovations in Seaweed Climate Change Adaptation, presentations focused on the latest technologies and strategies aimed at ensuring the seaweed industry remains resilient in the face of climate change, a major concern for coastal communities and the marine ecosystem, Contributions to Increased Seaweed Production, Discussions centered on how to further boost seaweed production, improve sustainability practices, and expand market opportunities.
During the event, DG Patarasa emphasized the significant contribution of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to the national seaweed production, underscoring the region’s importance in the overall growth and sustainability of the industry in the Philippines.
The congress also served as an important platform for industry stakeholders to exchange knowledge, discuss challenges, and collaborate on efforts to enhance the seaweed industry’s future in the country.
The event was participated by representatives from DA-BFAE, LGUs, Academe, local traders, and seaweed growers in the Philippines.
