MAFAR to train fisherfolk in Maguindanao on mangrove crab production

As part of the sustainability plan and as the project is nearing its completion to support the fisherfolk beneficiaries, particularly under its livelihood development component, 30 fisherfolk underwent training on mangrove crab production and management via zoom.

On November 4-5, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform-FishCoral conducted the training for the People’s Organization (POs) of Sultan Mastura, Sultan Kudarat, and Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao.

Through this training, the participant fisherfolk and mangrove crab growers will be capacitated on the proper management and production of mangroves and enhance their skills applying the concepts of Good Aquaculture Practices (GAqP).

Topics discussed via zoom by Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) are the following; Biology of mangrove crab, (Scylla app.) by Erish E. Superio, Biological considerations in establishing a crab hatchery and grow-out management in ponds, pens, and cages by Dr. Fe Estepa, Broodstock management & larval rearing by Jenalyn Lames, Nursery management by Pedrita Caballero.

Present in the event were Mr. Dan D. Baliao, Chief, SEAFDEC/AQD, Pendatun S. Patarasa, Bangsamoro Director General for Fisheries Services, Chief-of-Staff Arphia T. Ebus,JD, Senior Aquaculturist Honeylou Marcelo, Livelihood Devt. Officer Norhammine Nul and MAFAR Regional and Maguindanao staff.
